Public-Private Partnership Model for Mangrove Restoration, Plantation, Conservation and Management (REMAG)

Over the last five years, the Gujarat Ecology Commission has made concerted efforts to restore the fragile mangrove ecosystem in Gujarat. The Commission initiated the Community Based Mangrove Plantations (A Joint Mangrove Management) concept for the first timein which, the local community was involved as an active partner in mangrove conservation and management.

From 2002 to 2007, the Gujarat Ecology Commission actively took up mangrove plantations along the Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Khambhat with financial assistance from the India Canada Environment Facility. In order to achieve the goal so ambitious, GEC collaborated with public and private stakeholders.

In fact, in a first of its kind initiative, in the country, the GEC succeeded in involving both the corporate and public sector in mangrove plantation through a unique Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Corporate funds were mobilized and corporates were given the responsibility for the conservation of this fragile ecosystem. Under this partnership, native as well as newly introduced species of Mangroves have been planted on more than 8000 ha of the State's coastline; all this with the active participation of the local coastal communities.

Indeed, through this unique PPP model over the last four years, as many as 5090 ha have been restored between financial years 2006-07 and 2009-10.

Our partners in this initiative were as follows :

  • India Canada Environment Facility
  • NIKO
