Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project (ICZM)

 

A World Bank aided project being implemented in the Gulf of Kachchh

 

GEC was actively involved in the development and design of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project (ICZMP) with Forest & Environment Department, MoEF and World Bank. The ICZMP is a World Bank-funded project with a budget of Rs. 300 Crores.

It has been appointed as the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) of theICZMP. Under the ICZMP, GEC is working withseveral Project Executing Agencies (PEAs) into achieve the specific of the project. These objectives form specific components of the ICZMP.

GEC is working with the following PEAs are given the responsibility of implementing activities to attain the project's objectives :

  • For the development of mangrove ecosystem, the transplantation of coral reef and development of eco-tourism, it is working with Marine National Park (MNP) & Sanctuary, Jamnagar.
  • It is also working with Kutch Forest Circle for mangrove regeneration and conservation. Sea turtle conservation is another important activity undertaken in the project. Other activities include the development of a Marine Interpretation Centre, Canopy Walk etc., in Jamnagar and Kachch,to promoteeco-tourism.
  • Bhaskaracharya Institute of Space Application & Geo Informatics (BISAG) is working with GEC under the project to use GIS and RS for continual monitoring for coastal parameters and resources.
  • Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and GEER Foundation are also working with GEC under the project to develop capacity of the State for quality monitoring of sea water and management of marine and coastal resources.
  • Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) is another Project Executing Agency and implementing sewerage network and Sewage Treatment Plant under the project.
  • It is also working with Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited to develop a fifth generation oceanarium and with Gujarat Maritime Board for developing a DPR of Oil Spill Response Centre and Environmental Management Plans for the ports. For more than 160 villages along the coast of Gulf of Kutch, GEC is implementing socio-economic development component of the ICZMP.
