Policies to Action: National Workshop on Coastal Zone Management

The Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project (ICZMP) has completed seven years in Gujarat. As the State Project Management Unit, Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) has been instrumental in building the capacity of various stakeholders for comprehensive implementation of coastal management approaches in Gujarat. To achieve this ICZMP brought in unique activities for conservation as well as for socio-economic upliftment of coastal communities. ICZMP is funded by the World Bank and Society of Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM), Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India.

GEC in partnership with various government agencies such as; Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), Bhaskaracharya Institute of Space Applications & Geo-Informatics (BISAG), GEER Foundation, Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC), Marine National Park & Sanctuary (MNP&S) and Kachchh Forest Circle (KFC) have worked together to bring changes in the lives of coastal communities as well as for the conservation of the coastal natural resources.

To share the achievements of ICZMP as well as the coastal zone management experiences of Gujarat, GEC has planned to organize a two-day workshop on January 12 & 13, 2018. The inauguration of the workshop would be held on January 12, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Seminar Hall 1, Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar.

A two-day national workshop on coastal zone management was held on January 12 and 13, 2018 at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar. The workshop jointly organized by Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) and Society for Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM), Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, New Delhi gathered experts on coastal zone management, academicians, government officials, NGOs and industries to discuss about efforts and experiences. The workshop was inaugurated on January 12, 2018 by Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Former Secretary & Distinguished Scientist, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India; Mr. A. K. Mehta, IAS Addl. Secretary & National Project Director, SICOM, Government of India; Mr. Arvind Agarwal, IAS Addl. Chief Secretary, Forest & Environment Department, Government of Gujarat; Mr. Kuldeep Goyal, IFS PCCF & HoFF, Forest Department, Government of Gujarat; Mr. G. K. Sinha, IFS PCCF (Wildlife) and Dr. Ashok Kumar Saxena, IFS Member Secretary, GEC & Project Director, ICZMP Gujarat.
The workshop was attended by more than 250 participants from difference organizations and institutions. Officials from Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, ICZMP West Bengal, ICZMP Odisha, NCSCM – Chennai, Survey of India, International, ISME – Japan, DHI India, Institute of Ocean Management, SDMRI, Zoological Survey of India, MSSRF and senior officials from Government of Gujarat were the key presenters at the workshop. The workshop focussed on following themes:

  • Coastal Zone Management Practices & Way Forward
  • Integrated Coastal Zone Management
  • Coastal eco-tourism opportunities
  • Coastal resources conservation & management
  • Coastal Zone & Climate Change

Several sector experts would share their experiences and actions on coastal zone management.
