Since 2004, Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) has been functioning as one of the ENVIS centres in Gujarat with a mandate to work on the status of environment. From March 27, 2018 the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India has designated GEC-ENVIS centre as ‘ENVIS Hub’. As the ENVIS Hub, GEC would furnish data/research papers and any other information on Status of Environment and Related Issues, pertaining to Gujarat state. The ENVIS Hub would work to attain following objectives of ENVIS scheme:
- To promote, implement and coordinate Green Skill Development Programme
- To implement and coordinate Grid Based Decision Support System
- To participate, implement and coordinate community driven environmentally sustainable village programme as and when intimated
- To build a repository and dissemination centre in environmental science, information and management
- To enable application of modern technologies of acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information of environmental nature
- To support and promote research, development and innovation in ESIM
- To build storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities, with the ultimate objective of disseminating information speedily to the users
- To build a strong statistical base such that ENVIS is recognized as a South Asian Hub for ESIM
- To promote national cooperation and liaise with agencies concerned for exchange of environment related information
- To promote, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance ESIM capabilities
As the ENVIS Hub, GEC would also develop, maintain and continuously update a comprehensive information base that includes descriptive information as well as numerical data, with GIS. Major activities of the ENVIS Hub are as listed below:

- Preparation of State of Environment Report
- State of Environment Atlas
- Grid Based Decision Support System
- Green Skill Development Programme
- Community driven environmentally sustainable villages programme
- Monitoring of various centrally sponsored schemes
- Awareness and outreach programmes
